A long road to a perfect desexing

. T
hese two perfect piggy patents have been waiting a while for their big desexing day! Back in late 2024, they came in for their pre-desexing check, where our team discovered some underlying health issues. It’s important that Guinea Pigs (and all animals) are in tip-top shape before surgery, so their desexing had to be put on hold.

On examination, our vets picked up a crackling sound in both piggies’ lungs. After a course of antibiotics, a CT scan, and plenty of time to recover, they were finally back on the road to surgery.
Fast forward to now, both piggies have been successfully desexed by Dr Leanne and Nurse Tahlia, and given the all-clear at their post-op check with Nurse Alice.

They’re now recovering beautifully!

Did you know?
Male Guinea Pigs can be fertile as early as 4–6 weeks old.
Females are fertile from around 9–10 weeks.
Even after desexing, males can still impregnate females for up to 2–6 weeks!

This is just one of the many reasons why desexing is such an important part of Guinea Pig care.
