Your pet must be contained in a safe, secure carrier for the journey and in our waiting area, please only take your pet out once your veterinarian advises you to do so.

What do I do if I am running late?
Here at The Rabbit and Bird Doctors we are committed to providing the best possible care for your pets. To ensure that all clients and their pets receive timely attention, we have implemented the following late policy:
If you are running late, please call us at 03 9416 3100 as soon as possible to notify us. If you arrive 10 minutes late for your appointment, we will do our best to accommodate you, however the clinic runs back-to-back appointments, and your appointment may be delayed.
Please read our full Late and Cancellation Policy.
What type of payment do you accept?
We accept a range of different payment options including: Card, Bank Transfer, Cash & Payment Instalment (Third Party Providers).
For full information including surcharge information, please read our Payment Options for Clinical Visits information page.
I have insurance, what do I need to do when coming in for an appointment?
There is currently only one pet insurance company that will insure small animals (rabbits, guinea pigs, rats and birds) called Petcover.
If you have insurance and are coming into the clinic you do not need to bring anything with you. We will take payment as normal and send through an itemised invoice for you to then pass on to your insurance company. They will then be in touch with us to get your pets history, which can take up to a week, from there Petcover will be in touch with you.
What do I do if I find an injured, lost or baby animal
To help protect our patients we encourage the following.
If possible and is safe to do so, gently secure the animal in a carrier or a box with holes for air. Take care picking them up, you can use a towel, jumper or soft cloth to help scoop them up. Always keep yourself safe when rescuing animals and call for help when needed.
If you find an injured native animal contact Wildlife Victoria 03 8400 7300. If you are unsure if the animal is native, Wildlife Victoria may be able to assist in identifying the species for you.
If you find an injured, stray or baby animals (rabbits, guinea pigs, domestic rats and domestic birds), contact your local council to collect the animal or contact the Epping Animal Welfare Facility (wat djerring) 03 9217 2170 or The Lost Dogs home 03 9217 2170. Please note you will have to transport the animal/s to these locations yourself.
You can also contact rabbit rescues (rabbits only) for stray or baby rabbits, and they will advise you on whether they can or cannot accept the stray.

FAQ about your pet at our clinic
What do I do if I have an emergency with my pet?
When your pet is unwell, it can be very stressful and hard to think clearly.
In our business hours - Please call us directly (03) 9416 3100 for assistance. Our reception team will provide further direction.
We recommend reading more information around what a pet emergency is, what to do, what we do and where to go outside of business hours on our Emergency Information Page.
What to expect in a consultation
If this is your first consultation at The Rabbit Doctors you will have a nurse and a veterinarian with you, they will weigh your pet, clip their nails, get a full history and do a physical exam in the consult room. Any further treatment required will be discussed at this time.
As much as we try to be on time, sometimes there can be delays. We run back-to-back appointments that may carry over but more often it will be due to an emergency that has just come in. Our warm reception team will keep you as up to date as possible once you have arrived.
Taking urine from Rabbits and what it involves
If the vet requests a urine sample, it is easiest to collect it in the morning, as it is usually quicker to obtain the sample.
Book an early morning consult, preferably before 10am, bring a book or your laptop in case you need to wait because their bladder is empty.
For more information on Urine Collection, check out our Urine Collection Information page.
What is a pre-desexing check?
We recommend all rabbits, guinea pigs and rats are desexed and do a health check within 4 weeks of surgery. This is to ensure that your pet is healthy enough to have surgery and where your vet will discuss the actual procedure with you, and what it entails as well as any risks.

Why is it important to bring a poo sample to my rabbits pre-desexing check?
Prior to surgery the Vet team will request a poo sample from your bunny, this is to check for parasites (coccidia). They will do a faecal float and look under the microscope for any parasites. If parasites are present, medication will be required and no surgery will be booked just yet. Once medication is completed, another faecal sample will be required to redo the parasite check. If all cleared up, surgery will be booked.
