We Are Not SPECIALISTS
The Rabbit & Bird Doctors clinic developed from the enormous lifelong passion and interest our clinical directors have in the health, care and treatment of rabbits, small mammals and birds. All of our team have a special interest and experience in our species.
In Australia, vets graduate from University with the ability to see all species of animals. The majority of vets choose to work with a particular group of animals, such as small animal vets primarily see dogs and cats, mixed practice vets see many farm animals as well as dogs and cats. Some vets work only in zoos and others go into research.
Like us, there are vets who choose to work with and see what are considered exotic or unusual pets. These include anything other than dogs, cats or livestock. Finding a vet for the less traditional pet can be hard.
We like to think that it takes dedicated, special and unique vets to see such wonderful, unique creatures.
Whilst there is a small number of Avian Specialists in Australia, there are NO specific rabbit or small mammal specialists in Australia. There are some vets with specialist qualifications in zoo species, or exotic species which covers a number of different animals including rabbits and Guinea Pigs. To qualify, and be recognised as a Specialist, involves training time (usually overseas), working with other recognised specialists, publishing papers and passing specific exams. Because of this, it is important to reserve the use of the word Specialist only for those who have passed the exams to be registered as a Specialist.
At the Rabbit and Bird Doctors, we see rabbits, Guinea pigs, rats, mice and birds. This is all we do, so we see many thousands of these cases each year. Our vets are trained in-house in these species, and engage in ongoing external education. We regularly host vet and nursing students at the clinic, present at veterinary conferences, and provide training and support to other vets. Many of our team have further qualifications including Memberships from the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists (ANZCVS) in unusual pets and/or birds as well as many hours of practical experience.
So, whilst we are NOT “Specialists” – we ARE experts, and we DO have a special interest and unique understanding of our species. We passionately work hard to give every patient the very best care every day.
